Our Musical Director
Ashley Williams grew up with a keen interest in music and started playing the Violin and Piano from an early age.
He received a scholarship to attend the Minster School in 1985.
Having seen the Royal Marines Band perform, he was instantly hooked and attended an audition a short time after where he was selected to join the Royal Marines Band Service as a Violin, Clarinet and Piano player in September 1992.
Throughout a career spanning 23 years, Ashley served in all ranks up to and including Warrant Officer Bandmaster in various Royal Marines Bands including RM Band Scotland and The Royal Band Portsmouth.
A highlight of his career was to serve as leader of the orchestra on board Her Majesty’s Royal Yacht, Britannia. He has also held appointments as the Volunteer Band Instructor at both HMS Collingwood and HMS Rooke, Gibraltar.
His final responsibilities included Chief Instructor at the Royal Marines School of Music, Portsmouth and Executive Assistant to the Principal Director of Music, Royal Marines.
Ashley is a Bachelor of Music, holds a Licentiate in Wind Band Direction from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and is an Associate (Music Theory) of the Trinity College, London. Ashley qualified as a teacher in 2015, studying at Canterbury Christchurch University and is extremely delighted to have been appointed as Head of Music, Wellow House School where he aims to inspire children in all forms of music making. A more recent appointment to Deputy Head will provide an opportunity for Ashley to play a significant part in the strategic running of the school.
